Boom bap beats
Boom bap is the kick-snare backbone of nineties hip hop: swung drums, sampled loops, tempo almost always between 85 and 95 BPM. It is the most speech-like tempo in rap, which is exactly why it is the best place to learn.
There is nowhere to hide in boom bap. No hi-hat rolls carrying the energy, no 808 slide covering a late line - if your timing is off, you hear it. Practise here and everything else gets easier.
